When darkness fell on Golgotha,
And Jesus died on the cross.
The earth it shook and trembled,
To bear witness to such a loss.
And though we hold the cross so dear,
Where our sweet Saviour died.
Far more important than this should be,
That Jesus came back to life.
The soldiers cheered as they took Him down,
Their feelings they expressed.
They wrapped Him in a cloth so white,
Then in a tomb He was laid to rest.
With a stone they blocked the entrance,
To seal our Saviour’s plight.
And guards were ordered to stand by,
Throughout the day and night.
The stone that had blocked the entrance,
Was gently rolled away.
To show to all the miracle,
On the third and final day.
For when they rolled the stone away,
The tomb was empty and bare.
They searched for Him, but the angel said,
“He’s gone, He is no longer here.”
The soldiers looked in amazement,
When they stepped into that room.
And Mary looked in disbelief,
When she discovered an empty tomb.
Then Mary left and spoke of Him,
To the disciples how He’d risen.
The doubt on their faces was soon dispelled,
When He walked in their direction.
So overwhelmed with joy and delight,
They must have been that day.
To walk with Him again as Lord,
And have Him show the way.
He accomplished many things,
Through His death upon the cross.
And in His rising from the dead,
We are reconciled back to God.
Now that He has bridged the gap,
That our sinful nature tore apart.
We can freely and openly go to God,
And receive Christ Jesus in our heart.
